The major causes of air pollution in Dhaka are primarily attributed to brick kilns, surface dust and sand, and vehicle emissions¹. These three sources are responsible for almost 85% of the city's air pollution. The remaining 15% comes from lead, biomass burning, and sea salt¹.

- Brick Kilns: There are approximately 2,000 traditional brick kilns in and around Dhaka, which burn coal to create bricks for the construction industry. Their inefficient design leads to the release of PM2.5 and other pollutants¹.

- Surface Dust: As a river delta, Bangladesh's land mass is made of sediment and/or sand, which can easily become airborne, especially during construction projects like building bridges, highways, and mass rapid transit¹.

- Vehicle Emissions: The number of vehicles on Dhaka's roads increased by 68% between 2010 and 2018. Although government regulations have reduced the proportion of PM2.5 from vehicles since the 90s, diesel buses, trucks, jeeps, and minivans are still significant contributors¹.

It's also worth noting that since 2014, there have been efforts to reduce pollution from brick kilns, which may have altered the contribution of different sources to Dhaka's air pollution¹.
